Power of Association

In Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 11 Chapter 26 titled Aila Gita, we learn how unfavorable association is a threat to one's position in devotional service and how by associating with saintly persons one can attain the highest platform of devotion. In this chapter Lord Krishna while narrates the story of King Pururava to Uddhava. King Pururava became very bewildered by his association with heavenly society girl Urvashi. But after she advised him and left him, he came back to his senses that it was his mistake to consider her as his object of personal sense-gratification. He realised that his suffering was due to constant association of his senses with object of sense-gratification. So when he was deprived of it, and received transcendental knowledge, he became free of illusion. So Lord Krishna says in Srimad Bhagavatam verse 11.26.26

tato duhsangam utsrjya / satsu sajjeta buddhimaan
santa evaasya chindanti / mano vyaasangam uktibhih

"An intelligent person should therefore reject all bad association and instead take up the association of saintly devotees, whose words cut off the excessive attachment of one's mind."

Gita Jayanti 2013 - Dec 13th

This is the anniversary day commemorating the day that Srimad Bhagavad Gita was spoken by Lord Sri Krishna to His dearmost devotee Arjuna at the place now known as Jyotisar Tirtha amid the waring families of the Kurus and the Pandavas at Kurukshetra. If one wishes one can still go and visit that place and see the monument erected there with Krishna as Parthasarati (the chariot driver) and Arjuna the warrior on their chariot. It is claimed by the ashram who maintain the shrine that the tree that is next to Them is a continum growth of the original tree witness that was there at the actual day of speaking. Traditionally devotees come to Kurukshetra (Dharmakshetra) and recite Bhagavad Gita from early morning until the next morning, perform arati to Bhagavad Gita and to Krishna and Arjuna upon the chariot, offer lamps 'deep daan' at Brahma Sarovar, shloka recitals, shobha yatras and seminars on the significance of the Gita today.

Devotees who cannot get to Jyotisar Tirtha remember the blessed event by reciting Bhagavad Gita, and discussing the subject matter of Bhagavad Gita in the association of devotees. Distribution of Bhagavad Gitas' on this day is also a very auspicious activity to perform.
